If you’ve read “The Bad Breath Report”, you already know that hydrogen sulfide (which smells like rotten eggs!) is one of the main Volatile Sulfur Compounds, or “VSCs”, produced in 85-90% of bad breath cases.
In a study detailed at the 83rd General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, Dr. Kenichi Hojo of Tsurumi University in Yokohama, Japan, found that sugarless yogurt significantly reduced the levels of oral hydrogen sulfide in 80% of participants.
The 24 volunteers who partook in the study followed strict instructions on oral hygiene, diet and medication intake. The participants first avoided all yogurts for 2 weeks and then had samples of VSCs taken from their mouths. They then ate 90-grams (about 3 ounces) of sugarless yogurt twice-a-day for 6-weeks.
At the end of the study, more samples were taken and a significant reduction in hydrogen sulfide levels was discovered in 80% of participants.
It was postulated that active bacteria in the yogurt, specifically Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus effectively drowned-out the bacteria responsible for producing the hydrogen sulfide.
While that doesn’t effectively address the root cause of bad breath (as explained in “The Bad Breath Report”), it does show fighting bad breath doesn’t have to be unpleasant. After all, what could be more pleasant than a pot of tasty yogurt every day!?

If you’ve ever tried talking to someone who has bad breath, you know it is a problem. Unless you are really close friends with the person, chances are that you don’t want to say anything about the halitosis. But you probably don’t want to talk to that person either, because there is something especially uncomfortable about being on the receiving end of bad breath.
Or what if you’re the one with bad breath? Walking around unintentionally offending other people doesn’t seem like the best PR move.
So we must ask: How does bad breath work?
There are three common reasons for bad breath — when person:
Consumes smelly products such as garlic or cigarettes.
Has a large number of smelly bacteria in his or her mouth.
Has dental or medical problems so severe that it is causing a bad smell.
(The first two reasons are by far the most commo; the third would require professional attention.)
Your No. 1 defense against most kind sof bad breath is to avoid the products that cause it. However, if you cannot avoid, then you need to eliminate or mask the smells. A breath mint or a piece of gum is the easiest way to mask the smell. But if you have a toothbrush and toothpaste on hand, brushing your teeth and your tongue can go a long way toward solving the problem.
The other cause of bad breath is the bacteria that naturally live in your mouth. Your mouth is a warm, wet environment perfectly suited for bacteria, so zillions of them are happily living there. Like any other living being, these bacteria eat, drink and excrete. And many of the things that they excrete smell bad because they contain sulfur compounds. When you wake up with “morning breath,” it is these bacteria that are the cause.
The best way to fight this form of bacterial halitosis is to eliminate the bacteria, and this is a never-ending job because the bacteria are always coming back. Your first line of defense is brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day. Many people find that brushing after every meal can also help. You need to brush your tongue at the same time, since its bumpy surface can harbor lots of bacteria, especially toward the back of the tongue. You may also find an antibacterial mouthwash to be helpful.
If your mouth is especially friendly to bacteria, you may need to do more to mask the smells throughout the day. Sugar-free breath mints or gum can help. You want to avoid sugar because sugar is food for the bacteria you are trying to prevent.
How can you find out if you have bad breath? This is a sticky problem, because your nose habituates to the smell of your breath and can’t tell you much. The most reliable way is to ask a friend or a spouse to give you a reading. Your next best bet is to pop a pre-emptive breath mint or brush your teeth just in case.

But a person with unstoppable bad breath should see a doctor to make sure there is not an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. A doctor will be able to perform tests and quickly determine the cause and can offer solutions for getting the problem under control.

Fresh parsley or a strong mint are often effective ways to fight temporary bad breath. Avoid smoking. Otherwise, follow prescribed therapy to treat the underlying cause.

Bad breath caused by dental problems can be prevented easily with proper home and professional care. This means:

* Rinsing with a mouthwash approved by the American Dental Association (ADA)
